About Western College
The Western College, Konthoujam, was established on 5 October 1980, located in the historic and beautiful landscape of Konthoujam near Imphal-Jiribam road NH-37, about 14 kilometres from the heart of the capital, Imphal City. The college is spread across 7.36 acres and has adequate infrastructure. Establishing a college in the locality was a long-cherished dream of the general public in the area. The college is, in fact, a by-product of the ceaseless efforts of some pioneers of the locality. The main objective of establishing such a college is to impart quality-based higher education to the new generations and to facilitate rural students’ acquisition of higher education. With its long history and perseverance, the College has been one of the pioneer institutions in imparting knowledge and guidance to young minds. It allows rural youths to compete and face challenges in this changing world.
The main objective for establishing the college is to impart quality-based higher education for theyounger generations and to facilitate the rural students in acquiring higher education, particularly for the four assembly constituencies (Konthoujam A/C, Patsoi A/C, Sekmai A/C, Lamsang A/C) and the surrounding foothills.
The college opened B. A.& B. Sc. Courses and co-educational. During the last forty years of its existence, the development of the college has been significant. It is also the result of the dedicated services rendered by the employers, sympathisers, local educationists and members of the Governing Body.
The college was temporarily affiliated with Manipur University in the year 1987, and it was permanently affiliated in the year 2005. The institution is co-educational.
Now, the college is a Government Aided College {12 August 2021. Vide Govt. No. 10/108/2016- HE(Pt)}.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
The college has one NSS Units with a total strength of 100 volunteers. Our volunteers are involved in various college and nearby village activities, such as gardening, tree planting, and constructing village roads. NSS volunteers are also actively associated with burning social issues, such as awareness campaigns on crimes against women and environmental protection.
GAMES & SPORTS
The college has a large playground with ample space for constructing and expanding indoor and outdoor games and sports activities. The playground has a natural gallery that allows the spectators to have a good view of the games played on the field. Our students participated in various national games and sports tournaments representing the college through Manipur University.
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Though the college was founded in 1980, the ‘Western College Alumni Association’ was only inaugurated on 18 March 2016. All the ex-students, particularly the graduates from this college, are members of this association. Since its inception, the association has been progressing well, fulfilling its objectives under the governance of the association’s president, secretary, etc.
LIBRARY
The college has a separate library containing books and other documentation facilities. The number of books is about 15,000, and more are added yearly. In addition to textbooks and reference books, ejournals and periodicals are also subscribed to through N-list, which offers an accessible Wi-Fi facility. The college library is now fully automated. A new library building will be constructed and extended in the coming years.
HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
The college keeps first-aid kits to immediately relieve minor injuries and sicknesses before referring them to a designated healthcare unit. Besides, one Primary Health Sub-Centre (PHSC) and a Community Health Centre (CHC) are within a half-kilometre radius of the college. Easily accessible medical shops are available within the vicinity of the college campus.
OTHER FACILITIES
Well-equipped Computer Laboratory, Science Laboratory, Xerox at concessional rate, exemption of admission fee for the 3rd child of the family, awards for toppers of B.A./B.Sc. Examinations, internet, Wi-Fi, LAN facilities, and free admission for physically challenged students are also available.
